FALL FUN!

Hello Families!  Our weeks in October continue to be full and fun!  Read on to see what's up!

Reader's Workshop Centers - Center rotations have begun during reader's workshop on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  Kinders rotate in small groups to 3-4 different centers to practice what we are learning in reading, practice letter formation and sounds, meet with teachers, and eat snack.  They are doing so well becoming independent during this learning time with peers!  It can be tricky when we all have different group plans going on at the same time, but we are figuring it out!

Spider Hats - Did you see our super funny spider hats we made to study number 8 last week?!  There were so many steps to this project but kinders persisted and got to wear their hat when they finished.

Field Trip to Black Forest Nursery - Our field trip to Black Forest Nursery in Boscawen was a huge success!  We loved:
  • riding the bus
  • decorating mini pumpkins
  • exploring the nursery
  • learning about fruit trees, plants, and flowers
  • looking for animals who live there
  • visiting a place in our community

How do you see numbers? - In math, kinders have used visual cluster cards (they look like playing cards only without the numbers) to start seeing smaller quantities that make up larger quantities.  For example, on a 5 card kinders might see a group of 3 and 2, or a group of 4 and 1.  On an 8 card, kinders might see 7 and 1, 4 and 4, 5 and 3, 6 and 2.  This work starts to set the foundation for composing (putting together) and decomposing (taking apart) numbers.

Make Your Best Guess! - Our REACH teacher at BES, Mrs. Kurtz, joined us for math last week to teach us about making your best guess!  We did many fun activities with apples to practice:
  • estimating or making your best guess
  • counting accurately with 1:1 correspondence
  • using a 10 frame to estimate and represent a number
  • listening to a story
  • counting backward from 10

Indoor Free Choice - Choice is so important in kindergarten!  When we get the chance to stay inside for recess, many choices are offered for kinders to choose with friends.  Free play helps us learn:
  • decision making
  • turn taking
  • sharing
  • making a plan and carrying it out
  • cooperation
  • problem solving
  • collaboration with peers
  • building
  • creativity
  • and so much more
We love free play!

Going on a Leaf Hunt! - Did you hear about our leaf hunt on Monday!  We used some of the trails on the BES property to look for leaves and other items that we will use to sort and create fall art later this week!  What a great time of year to get outside.  :)

Ask your kinder:
  • What did you find on your leaf hunt?
  • What are the three ways to stretch words during writer's workshop? (Hint: rubber band, bubble gum, and snake)
  • What are the expectations for math by myself?  Which game do you like the most?
  • What was your favorite part of the field trip to Black Forest Nursery?
  • What does it feel like to be in the red zone?
  • What does the word community mean?
Reminders -
  • Field Trip to Bow Fire Department and Police Station October 31
  • Send in family pictures for our family picture wall
  • If you signed up for pumpkin science donations, please send to school by Monday, October 30
  • Confirm conference times sent via email if you haven't already :)
